ACT 1 - SCENE 2
 *

EARTH'S ORBIT.
(Luna, Earth's moon, speaks as the stars twinkle above her.)

Luna speaks to Mother Earth

LUNA
Oh, Mother. What have I done to deserve your silence?

(She raises her arms to beseech the night sky.)

...Mother Earth! Terra Firma! It is I, Luna, your assistant. Please answer.

(Across the crisp, clear distance she looks down to the browns and blues and greens of Earth, she receives no response, but continues.)

Silence? Then so be it.

I do try. I try to enjoy living here... and try to enjoy working with you, but how can I continue when my heart is breaking? How can I be asked to always wait on others... until they decide what they want! What about what I want. What about me. I have feelings too, you know.

Mother Earth, I have been here for you. You should appreciate me, but that does not seem so. When I fell in love with your son... (aside) Oh, my dear Terrance...

When I fell in love with your son I thought you would be happy for us, but you ignore me. And now I find that your son is just like you. He too ignores me. At work in his observatory he watches the heavens, giving away his time and attention when he should be with me.

He is only concerned with his new work... not like in the beginning when all he could think of was being with me. He came to me so few times and then he was gone. I guess he grew comfortable; as if I were easy to attain, no challenge, maybe he got bored.

(She is moving across space illuminated by a radiant light.)

Why should I love him anyway? He is but a mortal being, that is clear. Mother Earth he is not like you and I. We are of the noble Planet Realm and to us he is so strange and different, so... exotic...

I have searched your horizons for the growing fire-light that would signal my beloved Terrance's return... searched for so many lonely nights...

I do not wish to live alone...

Maybe it is time for me to leave.

Looking down to planet Earth,
Inside Van Allen's rings,
The clouds they wisp and float across,
The browns and blues and greens.

If I found another love,
In my celestial home,
I'd fly to there and be aware,
He'd keep me for his own.

But you keep me from flying!

In perigee my orbit holds,
A stable space-way course,
You keep me from the Asteroids,
With your gravidic force.

But if I found another love,
In my celestial home,
I would fly to there and be aware,
He'd keep me for his own.

But I love him, so,

Spin me near your world,
Let him dance with me tonight!
Whirl me 'round and 'round,
He will dance and dance and dance with me tonight!

I rise in full on twenty-eight,
Please guide me with a smile.
Your children sometimes visit me,
I hope someday he will stay with me awhile.

Oh! stay with me awhile.

(Ceres, Pallas and Vesta Asteroid visit their friend Luna, she hugs each warmly.)

LUNA
You three are very nice for coming over. I feel so lonely without my beloved. And for some reason your mother, Earth, will not talk to me about him.

Every few weeks I get so tired. I am not sure I can work tonight.

CERES
It is proper that we are here for you in your time of need, Luna, even if Mother is not. We are your friends!

LUNA
Thank you, Ceres.

VESTA
Yes, Luna, you are our dear friend. But you must be kind toward mother. Think of how it must be to have those little crawlies all over you!

CERES
Vesta! Do not use that kind of language. If you must speak of them then call them mortals.

(to Luna)

I must apologize for Vesta. Her manners are atrocious!

VESTA
What did I say?

PALLAS
Luna has enough troubles with Mother without you calling Terrance bad names! You are simply jealous of Terrance because you are not the youngest anymore!

LUNA
Thank you, Pallas.

VESTA
I really care about you Luna, but can I help it if you are foolish enough to fall in love with a cra... (she looks at Ceres) a mortal? What kind of relationship can come of that. Everybody knows that interspacial relationships never work out! I am trying to help!

(Luna pats Vesta on the arm.)

LUNA
I am not sure anything can help. Relationships! You know, I do not understand at all. It seems the harder I try and the more I love, the less I get in return.

(All the sisters knowingly nod and Pallas, the second oldest, lets out a deep sigh.)

PALLAS
I have a love...
VESTA
(Growning) Oh, no...

PALLAS
... he is more than I have dreamed; an angel down from heaven! (she sighs again) When we are together, I always want to tell him of this wonderful love I feel. But I am afraid. I say to myself, 'Next time I will tell him.' Always, it is... it is, 'Next time.' And I wait and wait...

(Ceres, the oldest, and little Vesta glance at each other; realizing Pallas' mistake, Luna looks surprised.)

LUNA
But why do you wait?

PALLAS
He is the one who makes me wait! I want him to say it first! What if I tell him that I love him and he does not say it back to me? I want to be the most special one in his life. So special that he will love me no matter what I can give. So special that he will love me no matter what I... I cannot give. And so I wait. He keeps me waiting. And in my heart, I know he will find his special love... and it will not be me.

CERES and VESTA
(Music Sample)

You keep me waiting,
You keep me waiting,
Anticipating,
Saving all my love for you.

PALLAS
You know I do, oh don't you babe,
I want you and no one else,
You keep me waiting, don't you babe,
You use my love then leave me high on a shelf.

How can you leave me home all alone,
While you see your special friends,
It hurts me deep inside when I realize,
You're doing it again!

CERES and VESTA
You keep me waiting,
You keep me waiting,
Anticipating,
Saving all my love for you.

PALLAS
You know I do, oh don't you babe,
I need you and no one else,
Why does it hurt to love you babe
Are tender words enough when I'm by myself.

So, how can you leave me alone,
Has our love come to an end?
I hope and then I cry, when I realize,
You're doing it again!

CERES and VESTA
You keep me waiting,
You keep me waiting,
Anticipating,
Saving all my love for you.

PALLAS
Oh. Baby, baby, baby don't leave me lonely...

LUNA
This is not good! You say he goes out on you!?

VESTA
He goes out on her all the time! What a creep! ... a bum, a jerk, a buffoon!

LUNA
Hush Vesta! You are not helping? (to Pallas) When did this happen?

PALLAS
You mean the last time?

(Luna is about to respond when Vesta interrupts.)

VESTA
I was just kidding. He never goes out on her. When would he find the time! He is always either working or with Pallas.

LUNA
What?!

VESTA
Like wow! He is seeing her tonight, too, you know!?

CERES
Pallas seems to think that when he is away from her, he is trying to find someone else. I have checked with his friends and they assure me this is not true. Pallas cannot seem to find any good reason for him to stay with her so she assumes he is leaving. I think she will eventually drive him away. (she quickly raises her hands in exasperation)

LUNA
...But what of his 'special' friend?

VESTA
That is someone she just made up. (pointing at the guilty Pallas) I think she gets hot when she makes up those stories!

(Pallas begins to become noticeably angry and slowly moves toward Vesta in a threatening manner. Vesta backs away in mock fear.)

PALLAS
Vesta, you better stop it! I told you that in strictest confidence!

VESTA
(to Ceres, in a confidential tone) You know that in the check-out lines at the stellarmarket she looks at those magazines with pictures of all the stars?

CERES
She always does that. I thought it was to save credits.

VESTA
No! She looks at the pictures and says (dramatically) "I just know that my lover will leave me for some pretty little star." It is so depressing you have to laugh!

(Vesta begins laughing while Pallas hits her on the arm.)

PALLAS
(beginning to cry from embarrassment) ...Yes, they are pretty, but I am just as pretty! I know this must be true! He would never leave me for any of them! Would he? I know he loves me! I know that he must!? (she turns to Luna and pleads) He does...say yes! Please tell me because I have no idea. Why should he?

(Luna places her arms around the weeping Pallas and gives her a warm hug.)

LUNA
There, there Pallas, come on. I am sure that he does love you or else he would not spend every night with you. Every night! Think of it. That is a lot of time. I ...

(The truth of this statement suddenly occurs to Luna.)

... I wish that I could see my Terrance half as often

PALLAS
...But I miss him so much when we are apart ...

LUNA
Yes ... I know ... I know...

PALLAS
I am always afraid that he will leave me for someone who is special. Not just a pretty, young star, but...

LUNA
You are special! Remember that! You must believe in yourself, and that you have great worth and value. He will see that and love you for your inner strength. Now, why not go talk to him and let him know how you truely feel? And ...

VESTA
Oh! Stop it! Before you make me sick!

You do not want to talk anymore of boring Pallas and her predictable, boring lover... Every night! The same thing! My Gaw... I think you would probably like to hear a really interesting story!

(Luna grows suspicious as Vesta gives her side-long glances.)

You know how I love to break the rules ... well, I just got back from Mars' cute city New Vegas ...

(A murmur of concern comes from the sisters.)

... and I had such a groovy time! There was this really bitchin' diplomatic party you know? and like wow! everyone was there!

CERES
Oh my, Vesta, you know it is strictly forbidden to attend the gatherings of mortals.

VESTA
Hey?! It was cool... (with a sly grin to Luna) ...I saw Luna's boyfriend, the astronomer. He is sooo cute! I think he smiled at me. He has these... buns... (she makes a grabbing motion with her hands)

CERES
Vesta!

(Luna crosses her arms, impatiently waiting for Vesta to finish her game.)

VESTA
Well, he does! I thought you might like to know that he left the party early with some rough looking homies and their dates. I overheard one say that she would hold his hand so he would not be afraid! Afraid of what, I wonder?

LUNA
(tired of Vesta's game) What is this about? What are you talking about!? Say what you mean ... (pleading) where did he go?!

VESTA
I... da-know. I guess you might say that your boyfriend went ... heaven knows where... to do heaven knows what! And everyone knows that in New Vegas ... heaven is rarely discussed.

LUNA
Oh, no! All this time I have spent waiting, in boredom, and he is out at parties not thinking of anyone but himself...

VESTA
...and the girls...

(Luna begins to leave the sisters, but Vesta grabs her arm to stop her. Luna jerks her arm away.)

LUNA
Oh, no! I am leaving now! Before it was just talk. But now!...

VESTA
Look, like I was not serious, you know. Lighten up! It was a joke. Those girls probably meant nothing to him.

LUNA
Thank you so very much for your interesting news.

CERES
See here, Luna! Where do you think you are...

LUNA
I have no idea where, but I am not staying here ... with that! (pointing at Vesta)

VESTA
Ahh ... come on ... I am sorry.

(Luna begins to walk away then quickly curves back towards Vesta and peers into the adolescent's face.)

LUNA
Oh! ... is that a crater I see?

(Vesta buries her face in her hands and steps back wailing loudly.)

VESTA
NOOO!! I have a party to go to! I will be so embarassed!

PALLAS
(sing-song) Crater face, crater face ...

CERES
Stop that. Luna! Pallas! Vesta! All of you. I said...

(Luna laughs. Pallas steps closer to Vesta trying to pull her hands from her face while chanting insults in sing-song. Ceres attempts to break up the melee. A light above grows brighter and closer.)

LUNA
(pointing at a bright light above) Look! Someone is coming!
