ACT 1 - SCENE 3
 *

EARTH'S ORBIT
(Luna and the Asteroid sisters watch the approaching light.)

Galileo Arrives

CERES
Luna, you may be able to get a ride to your new home. We must find a way to get his attention.

VESTA
Well, if it is a mortal man we can knock him down when he passes.

CERES
No, Vesta. That may give him the wrong impression. And besides, what if it is a mortal woman.

VESTA
Well, she would kick my...

PALLAS
Perhaps we should extend a thumb and wave it thus ... (she awkwardly attempts a hitchhiker signal.)

CERES
Hmm... maybe that takes more practice than we have time.

VESTA
(raising her hand) Ooo ... ooo ...

CERES
Yes, Vesta.

VESTA
We could throw a party and invite him!

PALLAS
That is a stupidest idea I have ever heard. Where are we going to find a caterer in time?

VESTA
Well do you have a better idea ya bim-bo!

CERES
Girls, girls... Think of a way to send a message fast! Here he comes!

LUNA
I know!

(Luna extends a long luxurious leg from beneath the folds of her conservative garment, moving it in a very sexually suggestive manner. Ceres, Pallas and Vesta look at Luna in wide-eyed amazement as the gleaming carriage stops.)

CERES
(to Luna) I am impressed! Where did you learn that?

LUNA
(tossing her hair with her hand) Star school.

VESTA
(pleading and hopping on both feet) Teach me! Teach me! I want to be a star!

CERES
Girls ... we have a guest ...

GALILEO
(excitedly emerging from carriage) My beautiful nieces! It has been such a long time!

CERES, PALLAS and VESTA
(in unison) Uncle Galileo!

(The sisters each hug Galileo quickly. He is gruffly embarrassed. Luna stands by herself while the others get reacquainted, she looks sad and alone.)

GALILEO
Let us not be rude. I believe this must be Luna.

CERES
Yes! Galileo, may I introduce the very intelligent and lovely, Luna... esquire. She has been Mother's senior technical assistant for quite some time...

VESTA
And doing a fab job, as you may have heard.

LUNA
(curtsy) I am honored to meet you, kind sir.

GALILEO
(rakishly deep bow) It is I that have the honor Miss.

VESTA
Uncle Galileo, have you talked to Mother lately? She is being a total spaceball...

CERES
Vesta! You speak of our mother!

VESTA
...But she is! She will not talk to Luna or you or even me... and I am the baby, her favorite

Oh yeah. I forgot. Pallas, too.

PALLAS
Terrance is the baby, you baby!

CERES
May we have some silence! Quiet! Both of you!

VESTA
(pointing at Pallas) She started it.

CERES
Uncle Galileo, what do you think?

GALILEO
I...

VESTA
...But, it is not fair that she does gives us the silent treatment just because Luna is in love...

PALLAS
(sing-song) ...with Ter-rance the as-tron-o-mer'...

VESTA
Is Mother afraid that her little boy will find love and run away from her?

PALLAS
I will wager that is it!

CERES
Pallas, you are agreeing with Vesta?

PALLAS
Me? Never! But... think about it... we left Mother a long time ago. Maybe she is lonely.

CERES
We really should visit her more often. Or maybe it is because of little Terrance! You are her brother, Uncle Galileo. What do you think?

GALILEO
I...

VESTA
... That must be exactly it. She is lonely. She probably misses me terribly. I am her favorite you know!

PALLAS
Former favorite!

VESTA
Pallas, you are so smart. I could not have spoken the words with more clarity. Why does everyone says you are so dumb...

PALLAS
Dumb? Who says that?!

CERES
Now, now... Wait a moment. I think it may be because of Luna's feelings for Terrance.

Luna, do you remember the first time he came to see you?

LUNA
Yes. I remember it like it was yesterday.

I had heard of him, but never thought much about it until I noticed him driving around the block where I live. A quick cruise or two then he was gone for a while. Then, finally, he parked his carriage right out front and slowly came up to my door. He was so shy. I thought it was cute.

VESTA
And?

LUNA
And soon after...he... many times after that he came to see me and...but the first time he... touched me... You know, that first small step for a man in any relationship... I felt this... spark... I have never let anyone so close before so I am not really sure... but when we are together I feel... an excitement.

VESTA
He was the first?

LUNA
I do have the marks of some experience, but that is just on the surface. Inside, where lies my true treasure, my heart, now is meant for only one. My beloved...

CERES
Terrance...

PALLAS
(weeping) That is so beautiful...

GALILEO
So you believe that this is the reason my sister ignores you?

CERES
She thinks she is protecting her youngest child from being hurt, but actually she is afraid he will fall in love and leave home forever. She would then be alone.

PALLAS
Yes. Mother is hurt.

(The sisters nod their heads in agreement.)

LUNA
This is not my fault! I had no reason to notice Terrance for a very long time. I knew he watched me when I would pass. He was so cute. Oh, it is not fair... after a wonderful beginning... Terrance no longer tries to see me.

CERES
Yes, let that wager stand. Mother, does, have a hand in this interference.

GALILEO
(to Luna)My sister, Earth, has raised Terrance well, but my dear, this astronomer, he is a mortal man! How can he be worthy of you? You are a goddess of the noble Planet Realm?

LUNA
I would rather not discuss it further! Think what you must.

GALILEO
I am sorry for the intrusion into your personal matters. It seems to me, however, that if this...man... no longer wants you then...

LUNA
I never said he did not want me! The fact is ... he is very busy... and important. Did I tell you he was very important... and intelligent... and very handsome and...

VESTA
Sure... but can he cook and do laundry?

PALLAS
Vesta! You are so mean and rotten!

VESTA
Oh, Yeah?

GALILEO
(edging away) I am sure that Terrance is a great fellow... ah... if there is anything I can...

LUNA
There is! Where are you going? You must get me out of here!

GALILEO
I am on my way to...

LUNA
Sounds fine. Take me with you! When do we leave?

GALILEO
What about Terrance? And Earth? Ceres! You are the oldest. Make a good example and talk to Luna. She has a job here... responsibilities...

LUNA
I am responsible only to myself. I no longer enjoy working here. I need a change. Who cares about some mortal man anyway.

GALILEO
You may come with me, but I must inform you that this journey could be dangerous. It would be insanity to risk yourself in such a way!

PALLAS
Dangerous?! Danger is Luna's middle name. Call her Luna D. Moon

GALILEO
How about Luna C.? (to Luna) Never the less... I am to meet with Lord Jupiter and negotiate the return of some stolen property.

LUNA
The great and terrible Lord Jupiter? Does the property you mention happen to a certain radioactive metal taken from Pluto?

GALILEO
Why yes. Word travels fast.

LUNA
This is a small town. Too small...

GALILEO
You must understand what you are getting yourself into. No matter what anyone has said Plutonium is very dangerous. Lord Jupiter says he will give it to the mortals on Earth if he is not declared Emperor.

LUNA
What would the mortals do with it?

GALILEO
Bombs, reactors, refrigerators... you name it, Luna. Mortals are careless. If any of that material gets loose in the atmosphere it would effectively cut off communication with Mother Earth almost forever. It is already difficult to contact her.

LUNA
What would happen to all the good people on Earth? What would happen to my Terrance?

GALILEO
It would be very bad. Very bad indeed! Possibly the end of all Earth's children.

VESTA
Really, who cares, anyway. They are such messes. Look how they foul their Worldly Realm anyway!

LUNA
I care Vesta! I must not leave now! They need me! Terrance needs me!

VESTA
Wait! A moment ago you said you were leaving both Mother Earth and Terrance. Make up your mind, Luna. Are you staying or are you leaving?

LUNA
I have made up my mind. I am staying! Galileo let us leave, quickly.

GALILEO
(Gripping his head) Wait! I am not understanding!

LUNA
I am going with you and help in any way I can. Terrance and Mother Earth must be saved! I must keep them safe! I must save my home!

CERES
You care so much for others. You really do care. Good luck.

PALLAS
Yes, best of luck and please come back to us safely.

LUNA
Thank you Pallas.

VESTA
And bring me back a surprise!

LUNA
O.K. A special surprise for Vesta.

CERES
Galileo, take good care of our girl.

GALILEO
I will, Ceres. My dear nieces... I do bid you all a fond farewell. Until next time. (he bows with flair)

LUNA
(to Galileo) Thank you... sorry about... you know...being so pushy.

(Galileo stands beside Luna. His arm is linked by Luna's and she gently places her head against his shoulder. He is now bold with vowed protectiveness.)

GALILEO
(bravado, to the sisters)Think of it no more. Count on me to keep her safe!

(The other three sisters nod in teary eyed agreement. From Luna a hug and a kiss goes to each sister. Vesta draws the saddened Pallas close in her arms at the melancholy of their life-long friend's departure. Galileo and Luna begin to move away.)

GALILEO
TO JUPITER!

LUNA
TO JUPITER!

Arms linked, they skip lightly away singing a song.
