ACT 1 - SCENE 6
 *

BASE NEW VEGAS, MARS
(Terrance, Venuski, the Messenger, the Scientist and several technicians, are working on their computers and charts at an exhausting pace. Marsovich is slumped in a chair asleep.)

Control Room on Mars - Mortal Realm.

TECHNICIAN
(NASA-like delivery over intercom) This is a stand down confirmation. All Earth and Mars stations are now in co-ordination. All departing search and rescue crews have now disembarked from docks 7 and 13. Repeating, this is a stand down confirmation.

(Technicians stand pensively during the announcement then begin to stretch and slowly leave the room. Venuski is gently shaking Marsovich awake.)

VENUSKI
Terrance, are you holding up okay? You've told us so many times how you adore the moon. This must be especially hard on you.

(Terrance shrugs his shoulders in response. A grouchy Marsovich stands up, rubbing the sleep from his face.)

MARSOVICH
What? Hard on? Who? Terrance? It must be love!

(Marsovich laughs gruffly and is elbowed in the ribs by Venuski causing him to gasp.)

VENUSKI
What would you know Marsovich! You are barbarian.

Love means responsibility! There you slept. Even when is very important, you disregard your duties. You treat love same way. I mean... I suppose you do... how would I know?

(to Terrance) ...I'm sorry... What I mean to say is... Love... Love... is fleeting thing.

MARSOVICH
Is also pain in...

VENUSKI
Marsi !!!

MARSOVICH
Neck !?

VENUSKI
...I mean, what I am saying, comrade professor, is that, you are speaking of Terrance's beloved! Please conduct yourself with some restraint and refrain from commenting on subjects of which you have no knowledge!

MARSOVICH
I know plenty about love, Venuski! I am the last of the red-hot latin lovers!

VENUSKI
Latin lover?! From where? Southern Ukraine? I thought you were from Siberia?

MARSOVICH
(to Terrance) At least now I know of love. Terrance, listen and you will hear of pain, heartache and pitfalls of poor tormented love-life of my past.

(Marsovich is about to begin his story when he is upstaged by Venuski who begins her tale.)

VENUSKI
(Music Sample)

The first time I was in love,
Was the worst time in my life.
I tried and tried and tried just to please,
But it turned out his soul was ice!

They say there's polar caps on Mars,
And the red planet ain't so hot.
My old boy-friend had a heavenly body,
But in love's department he ain't hot, thanks a lot!

I'm never, never, never, never,
Never! gonna fall in love again.
I'm never, never, never, ever,
Never gonna fall in love... again.

(Marsovich glowers at Venuski for her interruption. Angrily begins his tale, Venuski smirks.)

MARSOVICH
The first time I was in love,
Was a losing situation.
I tried and tried all my might just to please,
But she said I need a reservation!

They say there's methane gas on Venus,
If you breath it you will turn to dust.
I may be like iron when I face a man,
But near a woman I begin to rust!

I'm never, never ,never, never,
Never! gonna fall in love again.
I'm never, never, never, ever,
Never gonna fall in love... again.

(Venuski and Marsovich begin a French "apache" style dance, then squaring off, Marsovich gets a mischievous gleam in his eye, Venuski becomes wary.)

MARSOVICH
The next time I was in love,
It was just the other, other day.
She tried and tried and tried just to please,
So you know I had to say okay.

My baby's got eyes just a-like a star,
And a-lips that are oh! so sweet.
I tell you what my ba-by does to me,
She's like candy, she rots my teeth!

(Venuski angrily chases a laughing Marsovich, trying to hit him.)

MARSOVICH
I'm in love, love, love!
I'm in love, love, love,
With a beautiful girl,
I'm in love with,
A beautiful gir-gir-gir-gir-girl,
Whoa, whoa...

(After a cat-and-mouse game Marsovich turns and roughly embraces Venuski, who struggles violently and frees her arms, gently wrapping them around Marsovich's neck. They kiss passionately while Marsovich carries Venuski from the room. Terrance is left alone. He looks up to the transparent ceiling and the stars above, crossing his arms around him he shivers slightly.)

TERRANCE
Oh, Luna...

(Music Sample)

Now that you've gone,
It's like I'm caught away from Earth,
Miles and miles from home,
Now I know that you are worth,
More than the stars up in the night,
You would kiss me then you'd sigh,
"I love and don't know why..."
Now I miss you, how I miss you in the night.

In the bars of polar Mars,
The wild boy's boast of love they'd won,
Soldiers on the move,
Bravado in the sun,
But sometimes they would cry out in the night,
When they lost love they lost life,
They would love and not know why,
Now I miss you, how I miss you in the night.

How can I mail a card to you?
You left with no address.
How can I sail my ship to you?
When will I feel again I can rest?

This letter is signed and closed,
It's like the ending of a book,
The hero lost his love,
But would fate restore what they took,
As only passion in the night,
You would kiss me then I'd sigh,
"I love and don't know why..."
Now I miss you, oh, how I miss you in the night.

(Terrance sadly bows his head.)
