ACT 1 - SCENE 9

JUPITER'S ORBIT
(Luna is roughly brought before Jupiter by Baron Io and Duchess Europa.)

Jupiter and Luna

LUNA
Please release me, let me go!

JUPITER
Silence! Who are you to command the great and powerful Jupiter! That you have invaded my territory angers me greatly, but that you were escorted by Galileo, I find intolerable.

Do you know what he did to my dear sisters? Do you?!

IO
Do not forget, brother, Luna is also friends with Earth and you know who Earth was married to!

JUPITER
Halley S. Comet that son-of-a... (to Luna, bellowing) You should not get me started on Halley. And Baron Io...

IO
Yes, Lord Jupiter!

JUPITER
Shut-up...

LUNA
Wait? Lord Jupiter, why are you so angry at me? Is it because I was with Galileo or is it this Halley or what?

JUPITER
Oh... I hate them all! They are all part of this whole Earth conspiracy. Galileo, Halley, all of them. Surley, you must have heard of it. The old feud? (Luna shakes her head) So you have no idea. You must be told then. You will agree that I am in the right.

LUNA
Do I have a choice!

(Jupiter motions her to calm down.)

JUPITER
Just you listen. (pause) I used to be sombody in this town, but a long time ago, when you were still in the orphanage, before you began your work with Mother Earth, a big change occured. And that change was named Halley S. Comet. I do loath that name! He liked to fancy himself an explorer, but all knew he was a simple planet to planet sales rep.

Like many times before, after wandering about, Halley came home to his wife, Earth, but this time there was an extreme collision of wills. Mother Earth threw him out for the last time. The result of which was the demise of the only interesting thing about Earth: those big playful scaly pet things of hers. All gone. Tsk, tsk. And replaced by those whining, complaining, selfish, mortal beings. Crawlies!

LUNA
Please do not speak that way. My beloved Terrance is a mortal!

JUPITER
Who...?

LUNA
Dr. Terrance Stone.

JUPITER
I am not sure...

LUNA
The mortal...

JUPITER
But there are so many.

LUNA
Dr. Terrance Stone. The astronomer. Mother Earth's baby boy.

JUPITER
Oh, him. Pallas Asteroid has told me all about it. Did you know that the check-out lines at the Stellar-market have magazines with pictures of the stars? I wasn't shopping. I was there with my sister, Europa. Do you think Pallas is a bit whiny?

LUNA
Pallas?! She cannot even handle her own life, but she spreads mine all over town!

(Jupiter is chuckling at Luna's embarrassment, she holds up her hands to quiet him )

Never you mind. Go ahead and finish your story! And please watch your language, crawlie, indeed!

JUPITER
Yes, of course, I apologize. So... Halley was thrown out into free-space and was not seen or heard from for quite some time. But like all drifters he showed up again. This time he went after Saturn. My beautiful Saturn.

He deceived her! He used her fragile innocence and romantic ideals to trap her! And then he tricked her into marrying him... And... and... if that were not bad enough... he made her start a family. He was a rotten husband and a worse father. And, was he dependable? you ask!

LUNA
Yes, I was about to ask.

JUPITER
Dependable?! What do you think?

He would still get that traveling fever again and again, like before, and leave for the great beyond and be gone for a long, long time. Saturn would remain trapped at home with those children of theirs, living on paultry, meager credits he would sometimes send to her. What kind of husband is that!

LUNA
Why would she marry someone like that? It is obvious to me from hearing about Halley's first marriage to Earth that he was a very bad choice for a husband; terribly irresponsible, never there when needed.

JUPITER
Exactly! My thoughts exactly. I see that you and I think alike.

LUNA
(Luna crosses her arms and slowly shakes her head) You are beginning to remind me of someone we both know...

JUPITER
Huh...? (He thinks for a moment then shakes his head and continues)

He tricked her I tell you! You must understand. (pause) This is a small town, and being a small town resident she would understandably find this traveler quite dashing, but I think there was more.

I think she was ready to start a family and so she said yes and married the first who asked.

LUNA
What about love? Are not most in love before they take their vows?

JUPITER
We would like to think so, but maybe this is not true. It may be romantic idealism on our part. (pause) You see, she could have her family and... and not worry about the needs of a husband. He would be gone!

And to the eyes of everyone it would be... it would be... acceptable. Her family.

Yes! There it is! That is exactly what happened!

LUNA
What about Saturn? She has feelings! She must love someone?

JUPITER
She... ah, she did a long, long time ago. She was... my childhood sweet-heart.

LUNA
What?

JUPITER
We grew up next door to each other. We were together always. We were to be together throughout all time. Her love was to be my love. Her family was to be our family. But I was just starting out and not quite ready to take my vows before the Council, although in my heart I already had.

LUNA
So she married someone else.

JUPITER
We went around and around on this... this commitment thing till finally she became so angry she quit talking to me altogether. And then Halley...

Now things are different. I am rich. I can give her anything she wants.

LUNA
If you loved her so, why did you not commit and take your vows?

JUPITER
Well... you might not think so to look at me now, but I used to have a weight problem. When I was younger I was really heavy, but I lost a lot of that extra weight after taking an Atlas course. (he flexes his arm muscle impressively)

And I guess you have noticed my red birthmark. (points to his cheek) I have tried all the latest spot removers even Porcelana, but nothing has worked. If I could have gotten rid of... this... (pointing at his birthmark) I would have proudly stood before the Council, and she would have been proud to stand beside me!

LUNA
But it is only a birthmark... surely she loved you in spite of that. You were childhood sweet-hearts remember?

JUPITER
No!

LUNA
Confidence. You needed some self confidence. You could of had everything you wanted with a little more self confidence...

JUPITER
No, no! It is not true. She did not love me enough. She could have waited till I was ready!

LUNA
... Everything.

JUPITER
No! No! Not true! She did not love me enough! The love I so wanted has gone. The family I could of had is growing up without me... and I am alone... I am alone... and it is... it is your fault! All of you!

I hate you all! I hate Halley, I hate Earth, I hate her daughters and her son Terrance, I hate Galileo and since you came with him I... I hate you too!

You will never ever see any of them again. I will put Earth to sleep forever! She is as good as dead!

I will replace Sun and again lead the Council. I will show everyone the face of real power.

Everything will then be mine to do with as I please. You are now mine and I will now do with you... as I please!

LUNA
No... my lord... no!

JUPITER
Ah yes my pretty... As... I... please...

(Music Sample)

I'm outside of society,
I hate the Earth and the Earth hates me,
Up in the sky without no girl,
But I try, yes I try.

It is just a mistake that she won't wait,
Another guy a cuter date,
It's worse than my disease, this ugly face,
Someday it will be better, but not today, No!

I'm outside of society,
I hate the Earth and the Earth hates me,
Up in the sky without no girl,
But I try, yes I try.

It's such a crummy way to live,
To want a family, a wife and kids,
But they are denied to me so I want them more,
And the hardest part of all is that they live next door!

There’s just one thing that I can't take,
It's living life without a mate,
It's worse than saying please when I'm told to wait,
Someday it will be better, but not today, No!

I'm outside of society,
I hate the Earth and the Earth hates me,
Up in the sky without no girl,
But I try, yes I try!
